Busy busy busy... I noticed tonight that the download links were broken due to a recent change in the file listing script... now fixed. Sorry about that. 2008-04-28
OK! Got my taxes filed on time (hurray) and managed to get some of the forums up and running as well! You can check out all the fresh forum goodness from the community forums link. Most of the forums are public (you still need to register as a forum user) but a few are reserved for CAUS members. Happy posting! I'll try to get some topics started over the next couple of days. Oh, also, there is a short new article on how to swap your Caps Lock and Control keys around. 2008-04-21
The Terms of Service have been updated to clarify acceptable uses of the community access system. 2008-04-18
Apparently my recent Python upgrade removed one of the modules needed for the signup script. That problem has been fixed now. Those of you who have been trying to use the script might have better luck now. Next time, please let me know it's broken so I can fix it sooner :) The new version of SiteBuilder (signature) is now available! Both Linux (i386) and Windows executables are provided, plus a basic example site. 2008-04-10
Noticed and corrected a problem today with the signup script database. If you tried to sign up for a shell or web account using the "get account" link and received a blank page, try again. It should work now. If you have any problems, please mail support at pixin.net. I also tweaked the colours of the file listing. They were hard to read with the new lighter background. A new version of SiteBuilder (with both Linux and Win32 versions, plus examples) is coming as soon as I can tear myself away from Half Life long enough to write some docs :) 2008-04-02
OK! I've written a "new account application" script, terms of service document, set up the database, and so on. Check out the "get an account" link under navigation if you're interested. 2008-03-27
Sorry for the long absence! I got very busy after moving last summer, but things have calmed down somewhat and I'm back. The site has been redesigned with a more readable colour scheme. I'm going to try very hard to add more content over the next few weeks. Coming soon! I'm also working on getting a second server running which will be available for public/community access! It will provide free Unix shell accounts, web space, mail, a large Usenet news feed, and some other goodies. I just need to finish the signup form and write the terms of service document, so stay tuned. I also have a Linux version of SiteBuilder which I will post when I get a minute. 2007-06-06
I've added links to Neutrality.ca (for Canada) and Save The Internet (for America). Please check them out and sign the petition! It's important. Also, this site is (physically) moving. It will be offline from the evening of June 16th until the evening of June 18th. 2006-12-30
Some info on the SiteBuilder tool was added. I also noticed tonight that we have been getting mail (and occasional web hits) from a handful of IPv6-connected sites (notably netbsd.org). This is just plain cool. 2006-07-12
Significant cleanup and simplification of the site. More to come. 2006-08-23
As of tonight, most of the world, with the exception of a few better-behaved countries, is banned from our mail server. We've done this due to enormous volumes of spam and ISPs that seem unwilling to do anything about it. Affected senders will receive a message telling them to contact "postmaster" to request an exception to the ban; please be prepared to provide a copy of your (or your upstream ISP's) anti-spam policy, and the static IP address(es) of your outgoing mail servers. Exceptions will be considered individually. 2006-10-24
The whole site has been rewritten using a template-driven static page generator I wrote called SiteBuilder. The wiki, blog, and all the other php-driven dynamic content is gone. This site isn't updated enough to justify the overhead of a huge content-management system and dynamically rendering every page for every hit. |
My New Favourite Animal
This week's star is the mongoose Another entry in the "cute carnivore" series, we have the mongoose. Some mongooses are fairly smart and can learn simple tricks. They can be kept as pets to control vermin. (Your landlord will love you.) Mongooses giggle when mating. (I haven't tried that myself but I suspect it wouldn't go over so well.) One of their coolest features is that they are immune to snake neurotoxins because they have acetylcholine receptors! I guess that's why mongooses are sometimes used to hunt or fight venomous snakes. | |
